Jamshedpur, August 29, 2026: A woman reportedly gave birth inside a tempo outside the main gate of MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur on Saturday after being referred to the hospital for treatment. Her family has alleged that she and the newborn waited for around 30 minutes before receiving medical assistance.
The woman, identified as Neha Parveen of Jugsalai, was taken to MGM Hospital after experiencing labour pain. According to her family, she had initially been taken to Sadar Hospital, where doctors reportedly cited low haemoglobin and the possibility of surgery before referring her to MGM Hospital. She was subsequently taken to Jugsalai Community Health Centre and was again referred to MGM Hospital for further treatment.
The family said no ambulance was made available to them, leaving them to arrange a tempo to reach the hospital.
Delivery took place near hospital gate
The family said the journey was further delayed by poor road conditions and traffic congestion on Mango Bridge. By the time they reached MGM Hospital, Neha’s labour pain had intensified.
She delivered the baby inside the tempo near the hospital’s main gate.
According to the family, they informed hospital staff and nurses immediately after the delivery but alleged that medical assistance did not arrive for about half an hour. During this period, the woman and newborn reportedly remained inside the vehicle.
A nurse later reached the spot and the mother and child were taken to the hospital’s gynaecology and obstetrics department for treatment.
Doctors said mother and baby were healthy
After examination at the hospital, doctors reportedly found both the woman and the newborn to be in stable health.
People present at the spot questioned the hospital’s response, saying that a woman in labour and a newborn should receive immediate medical attention in an emergency situation.
The incident has also drawn attention to the availability of timely assistance for maternity patients arriving at the hospital. According to the source material, this is not the first reported instance of a woman giving birth in a vehicle outside or before reaching MGM Hospital. In an earlier incident, another woman had reportedly delivered a baby inside a Sumo vehicle before reaching the hospital.
The latest case has once again raised concerns among those present about emergency response arrangements and timely medical assistance for women arriving for delivery at MGM Hospital.
