Ranchi, December 17, 2024: JLKM leader Devendranath Mahato was released by the police after being detained during the recent JSSC-CGL protest. The release followed legal formalities at Ranchi’s Kotwali police station, where Devendranath Mahato signed a bond.

The incident occurred amid escalating tensions as thousands of students gathered to demand justice regarding the JSSC-CGL examination cancellations.

Police Action During JSSC-CGL Protest: Lathi-Charge and Detentions

On Monday, a large crowd of students and activists reached the JSSC office in Ranchi to stage a protest over the JSSC-CGL recruitment process. The demonstrators were stopped approximately 1.5 kilometers from the office by the administration, which led to a standoff.

When talks between the protesters and the authorities failed, the situation escalated. The police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries and detentions, including that of Devendranath Mahato.

Eyewitnesses reported that the lathi-charge led to chaos, with several students and activists sustaining minor injuries.

Thousands of Students Demand Action at JSSC Office

The protest witnessed participation from thousands of students, many of whom traveled from neighboring districts to voice their grievances. The JSSC-CGL examination cancellations have left aspirants frustrated, prompting widespread calls for justice and transparency.

The student leaders argued that the cancellation was unjust and demanded immediate corrective measures. Speaking about the incident, one protester said:
“We are here to demand justice for our hard work. The administration’s response with force was uncalled for.”

Devendranath Mahato Released After Bond Signing

Following the detention, Devendranath Mahato was taken to the Kotwali police station in Ranchi. After completing legal formalities, including signing a bond, Mahto was released later in the day.

The release came as student organizations and political leaders expressed concern over the handling of the protest.

Growing Tensions Over JSSC-CGL Recruitment Issues

The JSSC-CGL controversy has become a flashpoint for student activism in Jharkhand. Many students believe the administrative decisions lack transparency, fueling protests across the state.

Authorities have urged calm while assuring that the grievances will be addressed. However, the incident involving the detention of Devendranath Mahato has intensified the debate around police actions during peaceful demonstrations.
