Ranchi, September 7, 2026: A clash between two groups of students outside the main gate of Amity University in Ranchi’s Dhurwa area on Monday escalated into a physical altercation, during which Saurabh Paswan, son of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MLA Janardan Paswan, was allegedly assaulted.

The incident triggered a police response after the MLA informed authorities that his son had allegedly been abducted following the altercation. Police reached the area and later found Saurabh Paswan safely near the new Assembly building.

Clash reportedly followed drinking outside university gate

According to Ranchi City SP Paras Rana, preliminary investigation suggests that some students were consuming alcohol outside the university’s main gate when an argument broke out with another group of students.

The argument allegedly escalated into a fight between the two groups.

Police said Saurabh Paswan was also present at the spot and was allegedly assaulted during the altercation. The City SP said preliminary information indicated that Paswan had also consumed alcohol.

Police recover MLA’s son near new Assembly

According to the police, MLA Janardan Paswan contacted the authorities and reported that his son had been abducted.

Taking the information seriously, police teams were immediately sent to the area. Officers questioned people present at the location and gathered information about the sequence of events.

The preliminary investigation indicated that some youths from the other group allegedly took Saurabh Paswan into their vehicle and later dropped him near the new Assembly building.

Police subsequently recovered him and brought him to the police station.

Police say preliminary probe does not indicate abduction

City SP Paras Rana said the initial investigation does not indicate a case of abduction.

He said the preliminary information points towards an altercation between students allegedly under the influence of alcohol. However, police are examining all aspects of the incident before reaching a final conclusion.

Police have reportedly identified the youths who allegedly assaulted Saurabh Paswan and are examining their individual roles.

Three students detained

Police have detained three students for questioning as part of the investigation.

The police said further legal action will be taken on the basis of the FIR and investigation findings.

The incident has also raised questions about alcohol consumption outside the university gate and security arrangements in the area. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the clash and the subsequent movement of the MLA’s son.
