Khunti, September 8, 2026: Students of government and minority schools in Karra block of Khunti district took out a Prabhat Pheri and cycle rally on Tuesday to spread awareness about literacy and encourage efforts to eliminate illiteracy among people aged above 15 years.
The awareness activities were organised on International Literacy Day under the ULLAS programme, being implemented by the School Education and Literacy Department as part of the Nav Bharat Saksharta Programme.
Students spread literacy message through rallies
The programme began with prayer assemblies at schools, where teachers explained the importance of literacy and the objectives of the ULLAS programme to students.
Students then took out Prabhat Pheris and cycle rallies through the areas covered by their respective schools. Carrying posters and banners, they appealed to people to support efforts to make those above 15 years who are unable to read and write literate.
The rallies focused on spreading awareness about the importance of education and encouraging community participation in the literacy campaign.
Volunteers appointed to teach identified learners
Block Programme Officer Manmohan Sahu said the government aims to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the state.
As part of the initiative, teachers have conducted door-to-door surveys to identify people above 15 years who are not literate and register them on the programme portal.
According to Sahu, one volunteer teacher (VT) is appointed for every 10 identified learners to support their education.
Literacy assessment scheduled for September 20
Sahu said assessment examinations for learners under the Nav Bharat Saksharta Programme are conducted twice a year.
The next examination is scheduled for September 20 at all Jan Chetna Kendras. Candidates who successfully pass the examination will also receive certificates.
Schools are conducting regular awareness campaigns to inform eligible learners and communities about the upcoming assessment.
The initiative aims to reduce illiteracy in the region and enable more people to acquire basic reading and writing skills.
