Jamshedpur, September 8, 2026: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar will attend the convocation ceremony of Jamshedpur Women’s University on Tuesday as the chief guest. The ceremony will begin at 12 noon at Tata Auditorium on the XLRI campus.
The convocation will be held in a subdued manner this year following the death of Jharkhand Education Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu. No cultural programme has been planned as part of the ceremony.
2,200 students to receive degrees
According to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ila Kumar, degrees will be awarded to around 2,200 students during the convocation.
A total of 53 undergraduate and postgraduate toppers will receive gold medals for their academic performance.
For the first time, the university will also introduce a Chancellor’s Medal, which will be awarded to the overall topper among the students. The university said the initiative is intended to encourage academic interest and healthy competition among students.
Two students to receive Rekha Jha Memorial Medal
Two students will also be honoured with the Rekha Jha Memorial Medal. Each recipient will receive a cash award of ₹1 lakh along with the medal.
The university has received the Governor’s minute-to-minute programme. According to the schedule, Gangwar is expected to remain at the convocation from 12 noon to 1:30 pm, after which he will proceed to the Circuit House.
Students to attend in two groups
Because of the limited seating capacity of the XLRI auditorium, around 1,100 students will be accommodated inside the hall at one time.
After the Governor leaves, the remaining 1,100 students will be brought into the XLRI hall and awarded their degrees. The arrangement will ensure that all 2,200 graduating students receive their degrees as part of the convocation programme.
Gowns and angavastram for graduating students
The university will provide graduating students with gowns and angavastram for the ceremony.
Students will be allowed to take the angavastram home after the event, while the gowns will have to be returned to the university after the ceremony.
The introduction of the Chancellor’s Medal and the awarding of gold and memorial medals are among the key features of this year’s convocation.
